Being aware of trends in the card and gift sector can help your shop stand out from the crowd and drive customers to your door.&nbsp;<span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">I&#39;m not just talking about trends where leopard print or certain colours might be in fashion, although it useful to adopt these in your marketing and shop design each season. What we all need to be aware of are trends in products that are selling well or are about to sell well in our market place.<\/span>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tWhenever I speak or write about trends in the&nbsp;<span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">card and gift industry, I&#39;m often struck by how they make sense in wider sociological, economic and political situations we find ourselves in. Experienced marketeers can tune into this and almost feel what might come next. Trade Magazines<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tThe editors of the major trade magazines often write on trends in the marketplaces they cover. Magazines like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.progressivegifts.co.uk\" title=\"Progressive Gifts Trade Magazine\">Progressive Gifts<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.progressivegreetings.co.uk\" title=\"Progressive Greetings Trade Magazine\">Progressive Greetings<\/a>&nbsp;<span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">by <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.max-publishing.co.uk\" style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\" title=\"Max Publishing\">Max Publishing<\/a>&nbsp;<span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">both have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueeyedsun.co.uk\/blog\/vintage-progressive-greetings-magazine-whats-hot-october-2012\" style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\" title=\"What's Hot in Progressive Greetings\">What&#39;s Hot<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\"> sections where&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">retailers list out best selling products and top suppliers in different categories. The companies that are doing well often advertise in them too,&nbsp;<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.giftfocus.com\" style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\" title=\"Gift Focus Trade Magazine\">Gift Focus<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">is a bi-monthly publication that adds their advertisers from their trade magazine to their online directory on their website. They also regularly write on trends in the gift industry. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.greetingstoday.co.uk\" style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\" title=\"Greetings Today Trade Magazine\">Greetings Today<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\"> magazine and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.gifts-today.co.uk\" style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\" title=\"Gifts Today Trade Magazine\">Gifts today<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\"> by <\/span><a href=\"www.lemapublishing.co.uk\" style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\" title=\"Lema Publishing\">Lema Publishing<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\"> have regular columnists like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/newstores\" style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\" title=\"John Ryan on Twitter\">John Ryan<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\"> and myself who comment on trends and retail issues. Greetings Today also sends out useful emails if you subscribe to their list. Trade Fairs<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tAnother good place to keep an eye on trends is at trade shows. You can pick up a visual clues by wandering the halls, reading the show guides and attending free seminars. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.clarionevents.com\" title=\"Clarion Events\">Clarion Events<\/a> organise the design led <a href=\"http:\/\/www.topdrawer.co.uk\" title=\"Top Drawer Trade Show\">Top Drawer<\/a>&nbsp;<span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">trade shows in London in January and September which are great for cutting edge design. They also organise <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pulse-london.com\" style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\" title=\"Pulse Trade Show\">Pulse<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\"> in May and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.homeandgift.co.uk\" style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\" title=\"Home and Gift Trade Show\">Home &amp; Gift<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\"> in Harrogate in July and have one on one surgeries where you can get advice from experts. <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.i2ieventsgroup.com\" style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\" title=\"i2i Events\">i2i Events<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\"> organise <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.springfair.com\" style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\" title=\"Spring Fair Trade Show\">Spring Fair<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.autumnfair.com\" style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\" title=\"Autumn Fair Trade Show\">Autumn Fair<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\"> and are good at producing <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.autumnfair.com\/files\/i2i_buyers_guide_autumn_fair_v4.pdf\" style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\" title=\"Autumn Fair Buyers Guide\">buyers guides<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\"> and organising useful <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueeyedsun.co.uk\/blog\/uk-greeting-card-stationery-and-gift-market-trends-2013\" style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\" title=\"Trends seminar\">seminars on trends<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">. They also have excellent websites that have great supplier listings with lots of images. The <a href=\"www.giftoftheyear.co.uk\" title=\"Gift of the Year Awards\">Gift of the Year<\/a> awards are organised by the <a href=\"www.ga-uk.org\" title=\"The GA\">Giftware Association<\/a> and held at Spring Fair each year. Winners will often develop point of sale material that can help boost sales in your store. For greeting cards,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueeyedsun.co.uk\/blog\/tag\/the-henries\/\" style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\" title=\"The Henries Awards\">The Henries Awards<\/a>&nbsp;<span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">are held in October each year and have an excellent cross section of leading publishers. It&#39;s also worth paying attention to retailers who win awards at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueeyedsun.co.uk\/blog\/tag\/the-retas\/\" style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\" title=\"The Retas Awards\">The Retas<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\"> for card shops and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueeyedsun.co.uk\/blog\/tag\/the-greats-awards\/\" style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\" title=\"The Greats Awards\">The Greats<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\"> for gift shops. Check out the shops who are short listed to learn what has made their businesses successful. Retailers can benefit from discounts and special offers from supplier members at shows as well as various other benefits. They also have an excellent new directory show casing suppliers and an inspiring annual Members Day where you can learn from and network with industry pros. Members of associations tend to be more proactive with their businesses and pay closer attention to trends and products that sell. Sales Agents and Reps<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tIn many industries sales people are often regarded as focussing on their own interests to the point where customers have become wary of them. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.blueeyedsun.co.uk\" title=\"Blue Eyed Sun\">Blue Eyed Sun<\/a> have had so many agents and reps (that are not our own) refer customers to us over the years that I really believe the card and gift sales folk to be different in this regard. For the most part they are genuinely focussed on helping their retail customers. The Internet using Social Media and Blogs<\/strong>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\tI find tracking twitter activity at trade shows a great way of keeping up with what&#39;s going on in the market place. Social media can help with engaging with your customers and other retailers (who don&#39;t directly compete with you) to find out what trends are hot and what&#39;s selling well. <a href=\"http:\/\/giftsandgreetingsreview.com\" title=\"Gifts and Greetings Review\">Gifts and Greetings Review<\/a> is an active trade blog that keeps you up to date with industry news and trends. I also like the <a href=\"http:\/\/cardandgiftblog.blogspot.co.uk\" title=\"The Card and Gift Blog\">Card and Gift Blog<\/a> which regularly features up and coming card publishers. <a href=\"http:\/\/printpattern.blogspot.co.uk\" title=\"Print and Pattern Blog\">Print and Pattern<\/a> is also worth keeping an eye on.&nbsp;<span style=\"line-height: 1.6em;\">So there you have it six ways to track gift, stationery and greeting cards trends: Trade magazines, trade shows, trade awards, trade associations, sales reps and the internet.
