If you want to make any serious change in your business or personal life this year (and feel good about succeeding with it) my advice to you is don’t give anything up for your New Year Resolutions. Why not? Because, most of the time, when we do this we are setting ourselves up for failure with an unrealistic goal.<\/p>\n

Say, for example, you decide that you take too much sugar in your diet and this new year you will give it up to improve your health. Believe it or not, you are unwittingly building failure into your goal. Because your target is so absolute it leaves no room for you to be a human being and make mistakes. Once you have had one amount of sugar you have broken your resolution. When your resolution is broken you’ll feel a failure, you won’t see any point in sticking to it as it’s broken anyway and so will give up your goal.<\/p>\n

We need to make our resolutions specific and we need to make them habitual with a margin for error. Build them into your daily rituals. Say, for example, one of your new year resolutions is grow sales for our business. First, be specific with your target by making it a number that you can measure at the end of the year. Say you decide on 5% as a specific number, chunk that target into your daily rituals by making an actionable list that you can practice daily going forward and build it into your schedule or routine. As examples:<\/p>\n

1. Ask each customer if they would like to buy an extra item (adding 5% to each order)<\/p>\n

2. Grow your email list by adding one customer’s email a day (growing your database by 5%)<\/p>\n

3. Encourage each customer to join your loyalty club (growing repeat business by 5%)<\/p>\n

Once your goals are part of your daily habits, it is absolutely vital that you make a habit of celebrating achieving your goals. Too often in life we reach our targets and the first thing we say is “right, what’s next.” Stop doing this now! Treat yourself and treat your team well when you achieve your aims. This will reinforce your goals and the habits it took to help you achieve them.\u00a0Remember to make sure that your celebration doesn’t contradict your goals (ie don’t celebrate eating 95% less sugar by demolishing a chocolate cake!)<\/p>\n

Another tip is to remove failure as an option or to transform what failure means for you. When the\u00a0Spanish\u00a0conquistador Cortez arrived in Mexico he allegedly burnt his boats to prevent his men from being able to return, such was his commitment to his goal. When you set your goal, take a massive action like this immediately and build in a way of avoiding failure. If you are giving up sugar, throw away all of the biscuits, chocolate, etc in your house or destroy your fat clothes. If you are planning to grow sales, write a cheque to your favourite charity for \u00a320 every day that you do not take the actions on your daily list to achieve your goal. Double it each consecutive day that you do not take action. This changes the nature of failing your goal and means you win either way, if you fail then you help your charity and if you win then you help yourself.<\/p>\n

Remember to build your goals into your daily or weekly practice and make your new year resolutions a ritual for yourself.<\/p>\n
