Blue Eyed Sun - gorgeous greetings cards

Trade Show News

  • Autumn Fair 2012 Review

This Autumn Fair International was another record breaker for Blue Eyed Sun as we continue our year of outstanding trade show sales. It was great to see so many of our cherished customers and to meet so many new shops keen to stock our cards.

We successfully launched 22 brand new designs to our best selling Vintage range, which is up for two Henries Awards in a few weeks time. We had loads of great feedback on our cards and a good response to our new 2013 Valentines, Mothers Day and Fathers Day designs. We also took a lot of last minute Christmas orders.

Autumn Fair is a lot smaller than Spring Fair, which makes it a lot more manageable for visitors. It still attracts a good number of top buyers and suppliers though. Highlights included some excellent seminars for retailers. I personally managed to catch a really useful talk by journalist and blogger Kate Burt entitled 'Blogging 101: How do your customers use blogs?' Kate publishes a wonderful blog called Your Home is Lovely and gave some great tips on how to blog well. I'll be writing these up in a blog post soon so stay tuned. Although the greeting card section seemed a little smaller this year, there were some great publishers there including Really Good, The Little Dog, Cavania, Glebe Cottage, Laura Darrington, Velvet Olive, Berni Parker, Rachel Ellen, Soul and Holy Mackerel.

Trade shows are so good for marketing and Autumn Fair was no exception for us. We spent a lot of time talking to our customers about what they want and getting their feedback on new ranges we are developing for next year. As well as selling our cards, I also attended a meeting of the Greeting Card Association, where I was invited to join the GCA Council. I am looking forward to helping them going forward. Lastly, we'd like to say thank you to the organisers of Autumn Fair, i2i Events, who have kindly invited us to the Henries awards as guests of the theirs and I am very much looking forward to an evening of fun and laughter with our hosts.

If you didn't make the show, you can see us next at Top Drawer Autumn.

  • Home and Gift 2012 - Review of the New Hall H for cards

We had a fantastic record breaking show at the Home & Gift trade show in Harrogate this week. Thanks to everyone who came to see us in the new Hall H for greeting card publishers. To be honest, we were concerned that buyers wouldn't find us and be confused by the move. Having had such a good stand downstairs in Hall F for the last 10 years and because the 2011 Home and Gift show was one of our best ever, the last thing we wanted was to lose sales because of the change of hall.

We needn't have worried. Hall H is a massive improvement on the underground car park where we had previously been exhibiting. The ceiling is higher, it is brighter and the stands are tall, wooden clad and perfectly sized for displaying greeting cards. It was also well publicised before the show and well sign posted on site. Clarion, the organisers have really paid attention to the needs of card publishers and delivered a fantastic new platform for cards at the show. In fact, one buyer said to me that the entire show looked better than she'd ever seen it. I think this hall will go from strength to strength in the future.

Our new Spring designs and our new Blossom everyday range launched at the show. We had a great response to both, opening many new accounts and taking advance Spring orders from our lots of our customers. We also had a lot of buyers touching our cards on the stand. This year's Spring collection is very tactile and we had a lot of good feedback and interest in our new card ranges.

Don't worry if you missed us as all our designs are available to order online, via our sales agents or using our Spring 2013 brochure. Click here for more information on ordering Blue Eyed Sun cards.

You can see all these designs and 20 new Vintage everyday designs at Autumn Fair in September. Find us in Hall 4 on Stand 4D11. Click here to find out more about Autumn Fair.

  • PG Live 2012 Video Snapshot

Last week we exhibited at Progressive Greetings Live 2012 trade show (aka PG LIve and The London International Card Show) held at the Business Design Centre in Islington. A definitive highlight on the greetings card calendar, we had a small stand to preview our latest designs and to keep in touch with what's going on in the international greeting card business.

This year we took lots of orders for our new Vintage Christmas Range (launched at the show) and saw fantastic reactions to the sneak previews of our new Everyday and Spring 2013 ranges launching at Home & Gift in Harrogate in July (Hall H - Stand H90).

Organised by the publishers of Progressive Greetings Magazine, PG Live attracts the cream of the British greeting cards industry and lots of exciting new talent in the Springboard section, as well as the best suppliers, licensors, sales agents and international distributors in the greeting card world. I shot some quick footage around the hall and chopped it together for you to get a feel for the show. It's less than a minute long so don't blink ;) Enjoy!

Spring Fair 2012 - Greetings Card Section from Blue Eyed Sun.

We had a fantastic show at Spring Fair in Birmingham's NEC last week. I even managed to grab my camera on the last day and take some video of Hall 4 to show everyone who couldn't make it. We celebrated our tenth year of exhibiting at Spring Fair this year and I'm pleased to report that this was our best ever show! The interest in our new Vintage range continues to  grow and we are struggling to keep up with demand at the moment. Thanks to everyone who stopped by to see us. • 12 Top Tips for Trade Show Visitors

I recently worked out that I have spent over eight months of my life exhibiting at shows! In that time I have seen a lot of buyers come and go past our stands, so I thought I'd share the top 12 things I've noticed good buyers do to make their visit successful.

    1. Plan Who You are Going to See

Buyers who know where they are going at the show save time, money and energy. Often they have a list of suppliers and stand numbers written down on their note pad. They tend to look out for new suppliers on the way round to the ones they plan to see or if they have time afterwards. A notepad works well for planning and now Spring Fair have released an app that makes planning even easier for tech savvy buyers who have smart phones and ipads.

    2. Know What You Need

This might sound obvious, but if, for example, you have a greetings card section in your shop it is worth making a note of what stocks you are low on. Are you almost out of 40th birthday cards? Note down shortages and be sure to note best selling products that you are low on. Focus on stocking up on items that are going to grow your sales. Best sellers can be as important as New Products.

    3. Set Your Budget

In this climate we all need to keep an eye on our stock and not over order on things we don't need, but keep stock of products that sell well. To keep an eye on this, it's worth setting a budget for each department in your store. Eg cards, gifts, jewellery, etc. Make sure your budget matches what sells well. If you sell more cards than gifts, allocate more to the card budget. Stick to your plan when at the show. You can almost aways top up orders when you get back to the shop.

    4. Wear Sensible Shoes

High heels may look fab, but at large shows like Spring Fair where there are miles to cover you will suffer for your vanity. Take 2 pairs of comfortable shoes and alternate them each day for maximum comfort.

    5. Bring a wheelie bag (or a man with strong arms who likes shopping... if he exists)

Brochures soon stack up when you are on your way round the shows and a trolley bag can really take the strain off your arms. You don't need to look like a blue rinser heading down to the shops, think jet setter with wheeled hand luggage. Buyer Chic.

    6. Grab the Show Guide and Bookmark the Show's Website

Sometimes you can pick up ideas from browsing the guide or the show's site that can help you find a new supplier worth having. It's a lot easier than walking aisle after aisle in the hope of finding that elusive new best seller.

    7. Drink Water

Bottled water is a must at shows. The halls can be warm and dry, we're all talking a lot and moving a lot. If you feel thirsty you are already dehydrated. Your concentration slips massively when you are not hydrated and you need to be on your game. Sip water throughout the day. I get through 2-3 litres of water a day on my stand! Avoid alcohol and sugary drinks. Both can lead to burn out and get in the way of you being at your best.

    8. Watch What You Eat

When I worked in the film industry, we avoided feeding the camera crews meat for lunch as it slowed them down. If you want to avoid tiredness and aren't veggie, save meat for your evening meal. Sugary snacks and drinks will also cause your blood sugar to spike and crash. Unsalted nuts are a great way of avoiding hunger pangs and try to eat salads (think green) during the day.

    9. Get a Map and Know Your Route

Many shows are spread over several halls that can inter-connect in unusual ways. Knowing your way around can save you lots of wasted energy. Get the space clear in your mind before you go and grab a map if you struggle with doing this.

    10. Bring Your Business Cards

One of the top things visitors leave on their kitchen table at home is their business card! Make sure you remember yours and that it has your phone number, email, name, position and shop address on it. Having a typed up sheet with details of who owns the business, who takes care of accounts payable and two referees can also save you time when opening new accounts.

    11. Pre-Register for the Show

It's free to pre-register for almost all trade shows in our industry these days. If you do this you will avoid having to pay the entry fee of £20 or more on the day. Remember to bring your badge or your registration details to pick up your badge at the show.

    12. Book Accommodation in Advance

Big trade shows like Spring Fair lead to a large shortage of rooms available, so it's worth booking many months in advance. If you are late to find somewhere, look in the centre of the neighbouring city and commute to the the venue each day. For example at Birmingham there are often plenty of rooms in the centre and the NEC is a five minute train ride away. There are also often rooms further up the motorway that might look far away but are actually only 20-30 minutes by car.

Blue Eyed Sun are next exhibiting at Spring Fair 2015 - Stand 4L66

Spring Fair runs from Sunday 5th February until Thursday 9th February from 09:00 - 18:00 and brings together an inspirational showcase of over 340 British greetings card publishers in Hall 4 at the National Exhibition Centre (NEC) Birmingham. This is the biggest trade show of the year for our industry. It attracts buyers from all over the world and is the leading showcase of innovation and creativity in the global Greetings Card market. With the move of the Greetings & Stationery Section from Hall 3 to Hall 4, a new layout aimed at improving flow and the return of card giants Hallmark and Carte Blanche Greetings it should be a fantastic show. Spring Fair attracts over 70,000 visitors and features a massive range of products, so don't miss it!

A Spring Fair App has just been launched to make your visit easier. Download the Spring Fair App for your phone or iPad here.

Where to Stay at Spring Fair

Accommodation can be tough to find when the show is on and places get booked up months in advance. Also hotels close to the show charge much higher rates during this week. A useful tip is to look at hotels in Birmingham City Centre (which is a short train ride from the NEC) and also consider hotels that are 30 minutes away by motorway (people don't usually book these as they look far on the map, when actually they are quite close because the roads are fast). If you are travelling by car it is worth getting in early to avoid the Birmingham rush hour.

How to get to Spring Fair

Travel to the show is easy with excellent rail and motorway links. The NEC post code is B40 1NT (if you use a sat nav). You can park for free in several car parks on site, all of which have free shuttle buses to take you around the complex. Birmingham International Rail Station is a 5 minute walk from the show as is Birmingham International Airport. It is an 80 minute train ride from London Euston Rail Station. You can also click on the map below to plan your journey.

When you get to Spring Fair do remember to come and say hi to us on Stand 4J66.
